Drug Addiction

Drug is usually used as medicine to cure diseases. But sometimes it is taken by some people as a source of amusement. This habit of taking drug is called drug-addiction. The people who have this habit can not restrain themselves from taking such drugs. There are some reasons behind people's getting involved with this habit. Some people take drugs to forget their painful past, some from frustration, and some from bad companions. There are also another type of people who first take it as a fun but it turns addiction later on. Drug addiction has now become a serious problem of our society, especially in the town areas. Many young man and women are falling victims to this. It is a curse not only for them but also for the full nation which runs them completely. Taking drugs frequently one becomes addicted. So he gets accustomed to going with it. There are some effective reasons for drug addiction such as- frustration, bad association, availability of intoxicant, unemployment, failure in love, degradation of religious values, lack of family peace etc. Drugs are expensive. So to manage money the addicts often go for stealing, hijacking, killing and all sorts of misdeeds. Drugs are smuggled into the country. The smugglers carry on drug business freely. As a result, this curse has become widest spread all over the world. This kills drug addicted person slowly but surely. But we cannot allow this to go on unchecked. We must fight against these social cancers. The first thing to do is to highlight its dangerous effect to the people and make them aware of this deadly enemy of social life. People suffer from amnesia, insomnia, nausea, physical weakness, blood pressure and from many other lethal diseases. Their kidneys and livers also get damaged. So it should be stopped by any means. To prevent drug addiction we should rise awareness among the people. The mass media can play an effective role in this respect. Seminars and discussion and debate should be held in schools and colleges and universities. The government alone cannot solve this problem single handed. People must cooperate with it. Otherwise, there will not be any desired result. We should remember the advice, “Prevention is better than cure”.
